The sniffer dog Sid, a top performing four-legged member of the Romanian Customs, has reached the retirement age and will end his service in two months, the Romanian tax ANAF announced.

In between 2009 and 2017, Sid performed more than 4,000 checks on all means of transportation and helped Romanian Customs officers confiscate 20 cars and over 900,000 cigarettes.

Following checks Sid undertook, the Customs officers levied fines worth RON 821,566 (some EUR 182,570). The numbers cover only the activities the dog had at the Portile de Fier 1 checkpoint and in three other missions, at Siret, Moraviţa, and Bucharest.

ANAF, through the General Customs Division, currently employs 42 check teams made up of one customs officer and one dog.
