Romania's tax authority finds over EUR 2 bln damages to the state budget

16 December 2015

Romania’s tax authority ANAF discovered EUR 2.28 billion worth of damages to the state budget from companies and individuals who haven’t paid their taxes, in the first 11 months of the year.

The inspectors checked almost 56,000 companies and individuals during this period and determined some EUR 3.9 billion worth of tax obligations and accessories (penalties, interests), almost a quarter more compared to last year. ANAF also made criminal complaints on 3,000 taxpayers.

“Ghost companies” have been responsible for damages of EUR 582 million, according to the tax authority. These are companies set up only to cover other companies’ illegal operations.

Tax inspectors controlled fewer companies this year, as they have improved the methods for selecting the taxpayers. ANAF checked 66,000 companies in 2014 and 80,850 in 2013.
