Romania's Government appoints interim president of the Tax Agency

12 February 2016

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos appointed yesterday Daniel Diaconescu as interim president of the National Fiscal Administration Agency (ANAF).

Diaconescu, who has been the head of the Tax Information Department, will replace Gelu Stefan Diaconu, who is now investigated for abuse of office in a case of EU funds fraud and corruption.

According to DNA, ANAF’s former president was approached by deputy Madalin Voicu, who convinced him to issue a provision to exempt some Roma taxpayers from paying their social contributions on alleged revenues from civil conventions contracts. Those civil contracts were a part of two EU-funded projects that had been defrauded.

Ciolos dismissed Diaconu and ANAF’s vice-president Mihai Gogancea-Vatasoiu yesterday.

Diaconescu, the new interim president, had a monthly salary of RON 7,000 (EUR 1,561) in 2014 and an allowance of RON 18,000 (EUR 4,000) from the Romanian Lottery. He owned two houses, two land plots, and two cars.
