Romanian Prime Minister no longer wants pact with President

07 August 2014

Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced he will send a letter to President Traian Basescu informing him that the cohabitation pact between them is no longer valid.

The pact, which was signed in December 2012, when Ponta took office as Prime Minister, was aimed at keeping a normal relation between the two institutions despite the personal animosity between Ponta and Basescu.

It was also signed to ease worries for Romania’s external partners. Ponta took this decision after Basescu made several statements on Tuesday, saying that he will not sign the nomination decrees for the new budget and culture ministers.
