14 March 2019

The main opposition party in Romania, the National Liberal Party (PNL), has surpassed the main ruling party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), according to an opinion poll ordered by the liberals.

PNL has apparently reached 27.9% of the intended vote for the European elections in May while PSD’s share went down to 24.6%, according to sources quoted by G4Media.ro. The survey was carried out at the end of February and beginning of March.

A similar survey presented by the liberals at the end of January, showed PSD in front, with 30.2% of the intended vote, and PNL second, with 27%.

The new survey places the alliance of opposition parties Save Romania Union (USR) and Plus third, with 16% of the intended vote, followed by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), the junior ruling coalition partner, with 11.8%, and Pro Romania, the party of former prime minister Victor Ponta, with 6.7%.

The number of respondents saying they will surely go to vote in the elections for the European Parliament has increased with the estimated turnout reaching 36-40%. In 2014, only 32.4% of Romanians voted in the European elections.
