15,700 Romanian doctors, 15,000 researchers work abroad

Romania is among the countries that export highly qualified workforce, especially in the fields of research, medicine and information technology.

About 15,700 Romanian doctors, 15,000 Romanian researchers and many IT specialists are currently working abroad, according to a survey concluded by the Romanian Association for Health Promotion, reports local Hotnews.ro. The deficit of specialist doctors in Romania amounted to about 4,700 in 2017.

Most specialists didn’t move abroad because they were having a small income, but because of corruption, lack of opportunities for professional development, and bureaucracy in public institutions.

In research and development, circulatory migration and mobility are higher due to scientific networks. On the other side, migration of doctors tends to be permanent or long-term. The number of employees in research in Romania has dropped by about 30% in the last 20 years.

About 300,000 Romanian students have decided to study abroad in the last ten years.
