Romania, least affected by Russia’s ban on food imports

08 August 2014

Russia decided to ban imports of most food products from the countries which supported sanctions against it following the Ukraine crisis, but Romania is among the countries least affected by this decision. Romania’s food exports to Russia were only USD 7 million in 2013, according to data from the European Commission, quoted by Reuters.

Russia banned imports of beef, pork and poultry, as well as fish, cheese, milk, vegetables and fruits coming from the U.S., the European Union, Australia, Canada and Norway. This will affect Russian consumers, but also exporting states.

Last year, Russia imported USD 17.2 billion worth of food, and imports for the products targeted by the sanction totaled USD 9.2 billion. Norway and Poland will be most affected by the ban, as each state exported more than USD 1.1 billion worth of these products to Russia.

The U.S., Spain, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark also had large exports of food to Russia. Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovakia are least affected.
