Simona Halep eyes Grand Slam: What I’ve done so far is OK but not WOW!

08 April 2015

Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep, the world’s number three best player according to the WTA ranking, targets a Grand Slam title this year.

Halep, who has won three WTA titles this year, the most important of which was the one at Indian Wells, plans to train even harder in order to achieve her goal of winning her first Grand Slam title.

“This year, after I’ve had these results, I set an objective with my team at Miami: to get a Grand Slam title. So I’ve made a strict program for training and nothing else. My wish is to be as good as I can be. I will take the holiday after the season ends,” Halep said in an interview with Romanian sports station Digi Sport.

To achieve her goal, Simona Halep has to overcome two very strong opponents, American Serena Williams and Russian Maria Sharapova. Williams last beat Halep in the semifinals of the Miami Open, at the beginning of April, while Sharapova killed her dream of winning the first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year, when Halep reached her first big final.

“Sharapova and Serena are the world’s best and I always like learning from those better than me,” Halep said. She added that she likes Sharapova for her professionalism on court and dedication during the games, and admires Serena for her desire to be champion despite her age and her performances.

“I still have a lot to do in my life. What I’ve done so far is OK, but not WOW,” Halep concluded.
