Romania’s high-altitude road Transalpina might open for traffic this August

23 July 2015

Romania’s mountain road Transalpina might officially open for traffic in August, according to representatives of roads authority CNADNR’s department in Valcea.

“We are currently working on installing the safety guardrails, the markings, signs, and everything else that is necessary for this road to be ready in early-August. We will also increase the number of workers to speed up the work, so tourists can reach the area as soon as possible,” said representatives of CNADNR Valcea, cited by local Agerpres.

Although the road is officially closed, thousands of tourists went on Transalpina this summer, on the segment that goes up to 2,100m, between Obarsia Lotrului (Valcea) and Ranca (Gorj).

According to unofficial figures, some 500 cars go on Transalpina on a daily basis, and the number doubles during weekends.

At an altitude of 2,145 meters, DN67C, also known as Transalpina, is the highest altitude road in Romania. The other high altitude road in Romania is Transfagarasan.
