Romania’s railways operator CFR Calatori expects to turn to profit this year

Romania’s railway operator CFR Calatori estimates a profit of RON 70 million (some EUR 15.6 million) for this year, after suffering heavy losses in the previous years.

The railway expects to record revenues of RON 2.33 billion (EUR 522 million) this year and expenses of RON 2.26 billion (around EUR 506 million), according to the company’s 2014 budget approved by the government.

Romania’s railway operator CFR Calatori estimated a number of 50 million passengers for 2013, close to the level recorded in 2012 but almost 70 percent less compared to 1998, when the company was established. In 1998, the company carried over 146 million passengers.

Between 2007 and 2009, the number of passengers carried out by CFR Calatori decreased from 85.7 million to 65.5 million, reaching 57.6 million in 2010 and furthering going down to over 53 million in 2011.
