Romania, the most exposed country in EU in case of earthquake, estimated damages amount to over EUR 4 bln

Romania is the most exposed country in the European Union when it comes to a strong earthquake, the estimates showing that the damages would amount to over EUR 4 billion, according to the manager of PAID - the Insurance Against Natural Disasters Pool.

In this estimation, PAID considered an earthquake of over 7 degrees on Richter, according to Digi24.ro.

One of the strongest earthquakes in Romania took place in March 1977. With a magnitude of 7.2 on Richter, the quake killed over 1,500 people in Bucharest.

Several earthquakes happened in Romania in the last month. On October 6, a quake of 5.5 degrees on Richter struck Romania, while on Tuesday (October 15) another tremor shook the country.

Both originated in the Vrancea region, in central eastern Romania, but were felt in other cities across the country, including the capital Bucharest.
