Polish president: Poland and Romania agree on stronger NATO presence

04 November 2015

Polish president Andrzej Duda said on November 3 that he and the Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis considered that the NATO presence in the region should intensify.

Duda made a visit to the Cotroceni Palace, the headquarters of Romania’s President, as the two met to arrange the regional NATO summit that takes place today in Bucharest.

“The presence of the Allies’ troops in this part of Europe needs to intensify naturally and normally,” the Polish president said.

He also said that the European Union couldn’t afford to be dependant on the gas imports from Russia, and should use its own resources, as well as create an energy mix and diversify the energy sources.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which would transport gas from Russia to the European Union through the Baltic Sea, is based on a political decision and has no economic basis, according to Andrzej Duda. It will not increase Europe’s energy security. It is rather a useless investment and even damaging from a political perspective, the Polish president added.
