Jordanian citizen suspected of jihadist propaganda, banned from Romania for 15 years

30 December 2015

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has declared a Jordanian citizen of Palestinian origin undesirable in Romania for reasons of national security. He will be expulsed and will not be allowed to enter Romania for a period of 15 years.

The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has been monitoring Jamal A. Abdel Jabbar Khalil Shalash since 2014 and found that he was carrying out operations that posed risks and threats to national security. The Jordanian citizen has been living in Romania since 1991.

According to a SRI statement, the Jordanian has gone through several stages of (self)radicalization starting 2014. He systematically accessed the online propaganda of some jihadist terrorist entities from the Syrian-Iraqi conflict area, mainly Daesh (ISIS).

Moreover, Jamal A. Abdel Jabbar Khalil Shalash carried out jihadist propaganda, radicalization, and ideological recruitment for Daesh, attempting to legitimize the organization’s operating mode, including the recent attacks in Paris.

“The unconditional support he shows towards Daesh’s actions also includes his willingness to engage in action against Romania,” reads the SRI statement.

The Romanian authorities detained the Jordanian citizen on Tuesday evening.

Nine foreigners suspected of activities related to terrorism have been declared undesirable and expelled from Romania this year following decisions of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, at the proposal of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).
