Work at first motorway in Moldova begins

12 March 2019

Romanian construction company Spedition UMB, controlled by local investor Dorinel Umbrarescu, started work at the Bacau bypass motorway, the first highway segment in Moldova (although not linking two cities), according to some images published by the Pro Infrastructura Association (API), an NGO that focuses on large infrastructure, local Economica.net reported.

This is the first sizeable new infrastructure site opened this year.

"Some good news, for a change: we have activity on Bacau bypass motorway project, a project that contains the first 16.3 km of highway in Moldova! The photos captured by a member of our community on Saturday, 09.03.2019 show drills for pile foundations, works on the bridge over the Bistrita River, discharges between Siretu and DN2F and geotechnical drilling," said the NGO.

The tender for Bacău belt was re-launched on December 16, 2017, after the former contractor, Turkish group Eko Insaat, gave up the project. The bids were opened on February 12, 2018, and two of the four bidders later filed appeals following disqualification, including another Turkish company: Ictas Insaat. The winner was announced on 09.08.2018: the association of UMB-Tehnostrade, which asked for a price of RON 669 million (EUR 142 million) plus VAT for this project.
