Romanian Cosmote, the only OTE subsidiary with higher pre-tax profit on mobile segment

Romanian mobile telephony operator Cosmote, majority owned by Greek OTE, posted revenues of EUR 221.3 million in the first six months of this year, down 3.7 percent on the same period of last year, according to OTE’s most recent financial report. Its second quarter revenues were slightly down – 0.9 percent, to EUR 114 million. These were among the smallest revenues drops among OTE’s mobile operations.

The company managed to grow its profit before taxes, by 60 percent in the first six months, reaching EUR 40.5 million compared to EUR 25.3 million in the first six months of 2010. Cosmote also grew its pre-tax profit in the second quarter of the year, which was up 20.9 percent, to EUR 22.6 million. Romania was the only country where OTE managed to grow is profit from mobile operations, while in Greece, Bulgaria and Albania, it recorded drops in profit.

Cosmote’s total customer base in Romania reached 6.6 million, including Zapp customers, as of the end of the second quarter this year. 22.6 percent of these customers used postpaid cards.

Service revenues were up by approximately 4 percent, despite the adverse economic conditions and the very aggressive offers in the prepaid segment. Service revenues grew by 7 percent in Q2’11 compared to last year’s quarter, with outgoing service revenues increasing by over 4 percent, according to OTE.
