Romania will build a deposit for radioactive waste in Saligny, near Cernavoda starting 2016, with the cost of works estimated to reach EUR 340 million, according to the Nuclear and Radioactive Waster Agency in Romania. The deposit will cover 22 hectares out of the 40-hectare plot dedicated to this project. The first eight cells of the total 64 cells of this warehouse will be finalized in 2019. The total capacity of the deposit will be of 120,000 cubical meters.

The deposit will host all the materials and objects from areas with radioactive potential from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. Funding for this project will come from the tax state-owned Nuclearelectrica pays for radioactive waste, some EUR 2 per each MWh produced.

The radioactive waste deposit still needs the OK from the people of the Saligny locality, where a referendum will be organized.
