China bans Lady Gaga, Beyonce songs on the internet

26 August 2011

China's culture ministry has blacklisted 100 songs which were allegedly harming national cultural security and has given music websites until September 15 to remove those tracks. Songs sung by Lady Gaga, Beyonce and even Take That were included on the list. Those who do not comply with the new rules can be prosecuted. It is not the first time when Chinese authorities restrict content off the Internet.

China requires all songs to be first OK-ed, before being posted online. Lady Gaga has six banned songs: The Edge of Glory, Hair, Marry the Night, Americano, Judas and Bloody Mary. Beyonce's Run the World (Girls) has also been blacklisted, as well as Katy Perry's Last Friday Night, which has lyrics about a menage a trois. Backstreet Boys' track I Want It That Way, released more than ten years ago, has also been blacklisted.
