IMF currently checking Romanian economy status for new report

14 March 2018

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission met yesterday the Budget Commission in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies to evaluate the Romanian economy, the Chamber announced.

This is the yearly evaluation IMF drafts, although Romania does not have any ongoing financial agreement with the international financial institution. Such an evaluation with supervisory targets is mandatory for all IMF members.

A team of IMF experts from Washington has been in Bucharest since last week.

Last year, the IMF drafted a report which it published in May. It then warned the fiscal relaxation measures planned for 2017-2020 could increase the budget deficit to 6% of the GDP by 2022. It also highlighted the progress in reducing economic imbalances after the global financial crisis and recommended more support for investments, rather than for consumption.

In its upcoming report, the IMF will make recommendations on monetary policies, financial and economic policies for a stable, growing economy.
