Heat wave: Bucharest sets up 20 first aid containers and tents

03 August 2017

The Bucharest City Hall has set up 20 first aid containers and tents in the city’s most crowded areas to deal with potential health issues caused by the high temperatures these days.

The country’s Western half is under a code red for heat and the other half is under a code orange. The daytime temperatures are expected to go up to 37-39 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, August 3, meteorologists issued a red code warning for 12 counties in Romania: Satu Mare, Bihor, Arad, Timiş, Caraş-Severin, Sălaj, Cluj, Mureş, Alba, Hunedoara, Mehedinţi and Dolj. Temperatures are expected to climb to 39-42 degrees Celsius here.

The City Hall has also asked the city cleaning operators in all of the capital’s districts to multiply the sprinkling programs and evacuate waste more often, whenever it is needed.

The ten first aid containers have been set up in Romana Square, at the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) plaza; University Square, at the Coltea Hospital; Moghioroş Square; at the intersection of Ştefan cel Mare road with Barbu Văcărescu St.; in Iancului Square; Muncii Square; Crângaşi Square: North Railway Station; Roma Square – Gabroveni St.; and at the intersection of 11 Iunie St. and Regina Maria Blvd.

Each container is equipped with air conditioning, a medical sofa, chairs, water cooler, a first aid medical kit, blood pressure monitor, stethoscope, and various other medical supplies. The medical assistance is provided by personnel from the Bucharest Administration of Hospitals and Medical Services (ASSMB).

Ecological toilets are set up next to each such container, which cost RON 11,000 (EUR 2,445) a piece, Mediafax reported.

Other ten tents, have been set up in Victoriei Square; Română Square, at the subway; University Square at the Architecture Faculty; Unirii Square, on the Regina Maria Blvd.; Unirii Square, at the Unirea Shopping Center, at the Dristor subway; in the Herăstrău Park; at the Bucur Obor Store; in the Carol Park; and in the Cişmigiu Park. This is where volunteers from the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance Service (SABIF) work.

Meanwhile, all hospitals that are subordinated to the municipality are ready to respond to emergencies, the City Hall said.
