Former Romanian Anti-Organised Crime head, investigated for corruption

16 December 2014

The former chief prosecutor of the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) Alina Bica was sent to court yesterday by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).

She is being prosecuted for having approved compensation for a piece of land overestimated by more than EUR 62 million for businessman Gheorghe Stelian, from her position as representative of the Ministry of Justice within Romania’s National Authority for Property Restitution committee.

According to some DNA documents, published on Sunday by journalist Robert Turcescu on his blog, DNA prosecutors are conducting research into a new file concerning Alina Bica, disjoint from the file where the former DIICOT chief prosecutor was arrested. The anti-corruption prosecutors are investigating if Alina Bica received EUR 3.5 million bribe from businessman Ioan Niculae through Liviu Dragnea, to intervene in the settlement of Nicuale's file at DIICOT. For this, she was also promised the position of Attorney General.
