Romanian FinMin: No war between Government and central bank

25 April 2018

There is no war between the Government and Romania’s National Bank (BNR) so there is no need for mediation between the two institutions, finance minister Eugen Teodorovici said on Tuesday, April 24, local News.ro reported.

His statement came after president Klaus Iohannis said on Monday that he wanted to invite the Government and BNR representatives to a meeting at the Cotroceni Palace to settle their conflict.

Some Government officials as well as ruling party leader Liviu Dragnea have criticized the central bank recently for the increase in inflation and interest rates. Iohannis said the harsh statements have taken this conflict too far and offered to mediate it.

Teodorovici said that the Finance Ministry and BNR have been collaborating, which does not exclude critics between the two sides.

Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea said recently that some of the statements from BNR, the Presidency and opposition leaders seemed coordinated and aimed at discrediting the Government’s economic and fiscal policies. He also blamed foreign companies for the inflation rate increase.
