Danube navigation improved with EUR 103 mln in Romania

17 October 2014

Navigation on the Danube has improved with the help of a EUR 103 million budget, half of which came from non-reimbursable funds.

The Romanian authority which manages the navigable Danube across Romania has implemented the IRIS Europe 3 project, which consisted in adding latest generation technologies and improving navigation infrastructure. The IRIS is a joint project of a consortium that represents 7 EU states, Romania included, and partners from seven other states.

Other investments were channeled through the NEWADA duo project, which aims to consolidate cooperation between waterway administrations along the Danube, to standardize services and infrastructure along the river. Both these European programs target a 20% increase in traffic on the Danube by 2020.
