Romania's Court of Accounts finds 132,700 irregularities at local authorities

Romania’s Court of Accounts has found over 132,700 irregularities in the way local authorities have been spending their money, between January 2009 and June 2017.

The value of financial and accounting deviations amounts to over RON 87.2 billion (EUR 19 billion), according to a report of the Court of Accounts cited by local Agerpres.

Villages’ budgets recorded most irregularities, namely almost 97,400. The Court of Accounts has also found around 28,300 irregularities in the state budget. The deviations amount to RON 143.2 billion (EUR 31.2 billion).

In total, the Court of Accounts has identified 186,134 cases of deviations from legality during this period, worth over RON 331.3 billion (EUR 72.2 billion).

The Parliament appointed a new management at the Court of Accounts last week and issued a signal that the institution should be less focused on analyzing the way local authorities decide to spend their money.
