World Bank: Romania needs to seize the stolen wealth

27 October 2015

Romania's judicial system should focus on the stolen goods, which needs to be seized and recovered, so that the people get back their money, said Ismail Radwan, World Bank specialist.

Corrupt politicians and businessmen are arrested, but after one or two years in prison they get out and enjoy the goods they have stolen from public money, Radwan added. The Government needs to become more efficient and fight against corruption, according to the World Bank specialist.

“In the last 18 months we have established relationships with the Government and the Prime Minister to create a strategic unit which would work with us and follow the specific recommendations of the European Commission,” Radwan said, cited by local Agerpres.

The Government approved in May the setting up of a new agency that would manage seized assets from corruption cases, but the Senate rejected the project earlier this month.
