Visual cruise down the Danube, now available in Google Street View. What to see in Romania?

31 March 2015

Traveler aficionados can test run a cruise on the Danube from the confines of their homes, as Google has made it easy for them to travel down the famous European river across all six country it passes.

The internet giant has published Street View images down the Danube: six countries, three capital cities, citadels, gates and thousands of impressive images.

A Google trekking camera on board of the Treasures passenger ship took 360 degrees panoramic pictures down the Danube. The device used 15 lenses installed at the top of a topmast, each of them pointing to a different direction.

“Taking pictures down the Danube is one of the biggest special projects by Google Street View. It is for the first time when Google publishes a collection of images spanning over six countries,” said Dan Bulucea, country manager with Google Romania.

The latest additions to Google Street View explore two thirds of the Danube, from Slovakia, to Austria, and up to Cernavoda, in Romania. Google took the pictures in the summer of 2014, when it crossed Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.

In Romania, the route uncovers the famous Decebal Statue at Cazane in the Danube Canyon, as well as the Iron Gates, just as the river enters the country, the Cernavoda and Giurgiu – Ruse bridges, and the  Golubac fortress. More pictures on Google Street View.

The same trekking device which took the pictures down the Danube also photographed other famous locations for the worldwide patrimony, such as the Great Canyon, the Taj Mahal, the Fuji island, among others.
