Romania’s People Palace comes third among Best Buildings in the World

06 August 2014

The People Palace in the Romanian capital Bucharest ranks third among ten best buildings in the world, according to a ranking by The Independent. The ranking was based on proposals from journalists and writers. First in the world came the Pantheon in Rome, then the Rocamadour medieval monastery in France.

The People’s Palace, which hosts the Romanian Parliament, is described as “Hideous but also sort of impressive.”

The list was inspired by Tom Wilkinson's 'Bricks & Mortals: Ten Great Buildings and the People They Made', which was published by Bloomsbury in July 2014. The full list is here.

The People’s Palace covers some 330,000 sqm, and is the second largest administrative building in the world, after the US Pentagon. Construction started in 1980, when 7 square kilometers of houses and monasteries were demolished, and 40,000 people were moved from the area to make room for the building. The People’s Palace is still an unfinished building.
