Romania’s Education Ministry investigated for EU fund misuse

14 October 2014

The Education Ministry headquarters were raided by Anti-Corruption prosecutors yesterday, who searched the management unit offices for projects with external financing, and the national center for professional and technical education within the ministry.

Prosecutors seized documents, computers and storage devices, in search of evidence for misuse of funds in a EUR 3.6 million EU funding case.

They believe there were irregularities in an EU-funded project meant to increase access to education for disadvantaged communities, mainly for the rroma, between 2008 and 2009.

The authorities think some of the expenses are not backed up by documents, and that some documents in the file have been re-done since.
