Romania to pay EUR 43 million for first census after EU entry

12 July 2011

Romania will organize a census this fall, the first once since the country joined the European Union in 2007. The latest census in the country took place in 2002.

The country's Statistics Institute will hire 130,000 people for the census which will be organized between October 20 and 31. The country will have to pay EUR 43 million to organize this census and will impose fines for those who will not participate. The fine can go up to RON 1,000 (around EUR 236). Those who will not be found home can submit their data and fill in the questionnaire in the next two days after the census visit. Data will be confidential and used only for statistics.

“ After the census in October, we will know more about the number of Romanian immigrants, as we will get data about them from their relatives or from local authorities,” according to Vergil Voineagu, head of the country's Statistics Institute.

Romania had 21.6 million people at the 2002 census. Its results were published in 2003.
