New minimum and basic medical care packages introduced in Romania this summer

14 May 2014

Romanians will have have access to a basic set of medical care, after a new basic medical package was recently approved by the Government.

This would allow patients up to 39, without any symptoms, to see the family doctor at least once every three years.

Aiming to prevent illnesses more, the package would also give access to Romanians over 40 to a medical visit once a year. Patients will also undergo a risk assessment.

These regular visits to the doctor will be mandatory under the new set of rules which will be enforced starting June 1, this year, according to the Health Ministry. It is yet uncertain what happens if Romanians don't attend their mandatory medical checkups.

Apart from the basic package, a minimum care package was also introduced, for those who do not pay medical insurance. Both of these packages include hepatitis and HIV testing for pregnant women.

The basic package also includes active monitoring for cardio diseases, diabetes, asthma, respiratory diseases and severe kidney diseases.

This package also includes dental care, consultations, prophylactic services as well as treatments, and emergency dental care. The latter will also be introduced in the minimum care package starting January 1, 2015.
