Highest losses and profits in Romania's insurance sector

Sixteen local insurers posted losses of EUR 80.6 million last year, with three of them generating almost half of the total losses (44%).

Insurer Euroins Romania Asigurare Reasigurare had the biggest loss, of EUR 14.3 million. It was followed by Uniqa Asigurari, which saw losses of EUR 10.7 million, and Gothaer Asigurare, which lost EUR 10.3 million.

On the other side, 21 local insurers posted profits last year, amounting to a total profit of EUR 73 million. Three companies are responsible for half of the profit, namely Allianz Tiriac Asigurari, which made a net profit of EUR 16.5 million, Metropolitan Life (EUR 11.4 million) and Generali Romania (EUR 8.8million).

The general insurance market, which includes the mandatory car insurance (RCA), recorded overall losses of EUR 30 million. In contrast, the life insurance market was profitable, with a positive result of EUR 33.1 million.

Romania’s insurance market posted a total loss of EUR 7.9 million last year, compared to a loss of EUR 307 million in 2014.
