French chef turns Wednesdays into all Romanian ingredients days at George Butunoiu & Oskar restaurant

15 March 2013

butunoiu oscar restaurantDavid Contant, the French chef at headhunter George Butunoiu's bistro La George Butunoiu & Oskar, for both an experiment and a bet, is turning Wednesdays into only Romanian ingredients days for all the classic recipes on the bistro's menu. He is convinced many will not know the difference, said George Butunoiu, the owner of the bistro and one of the best known headhunters in Romania.

The rest of the time, the recipes in the bistro's menu use ingredients brought from France – including the vegetables - while chef Contant also creates some recipes every day with produce bought fresh from the local markets – Plats du Jour.

The 43-year old Contant, who used to be the chef at the now closed restaurant Heritage, also owns a farm in Contesti, close to Bucharest, where he has a nut tree orchard and an oil mill.

George Butunoiu, who was also involved in the launch of Heritage together with a group of other business people, opened his restaurant in early 2012. He chose to give his name to the restaurant, and added the name of his dog, Oscar, substituting the 'c' for a 'k' in the restaurant name. The restaurant is located in a villa in Bucharest in the Beller – Floreasca area and the investment in opening it was of some EUR 60,000.
