Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, currently number three in the WTA ranking, was eliminated in the quarter finals of the Australian Open by Russian Ekaterina Makarova (no. 11 WTA).

Halep lost in two sets, ended 4-6, 0-6, as Makarova played almost without mistake, making her way to the semi-finals. Makarova will play against fellow Russian Maria Sharapova, who beat Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.

Halep managed to equal last year’s performance, when she also stopped in the quarter finals of the Australian Open. However, this year she was expected to make it to the semi-finals.
