Car sales make a third of Romania’s exports to Russia

08 August 2014

Car sales represent a third of Romania’s exports to Russia, which increased by USD 500 million last year, to a total of USD 1.84 billion, according to Mediafax newswire.

Machinery and equipment make about a quarter of Romania’s exports to Russia, chemicals represent 12.4%, furniture is about 5%, metals – 4.9%, plastics – 4.1%, and wood – 4%, statistics show. Carmaker Automobile Dacia, tire producers Michelin and Pirelli, Timber producers Kronospan and Egger, and steelmaker ArcelorMittal Galati are among the top Romanian exporters to Russia.

These companies would be most affected if Russia continues to impose bans on imports of different product types from countries which supported sanctions against it. Russia is the second largest commercial partner for Romania outside the EU, after Turkey. The value of trade between the two countries was of almost USD 5 billion. Romania’s imports from Russia were USD 1.3 billion larger than the exports to the country.
