Romanian President’s brother to be placed under house arrest

26 November 2014

Mircea Basescu, Romanian President Traian Basescu’s brother, will be placed under house arrest, the Constanta Appeal Court decided on Wednesday, November 26.

Mircea Basescu was arrested on June 20 and has spent the last five months in police custody. He was indicted for allegedly taking a EUR 250,000 bribe to help a Romanian underworld leader, Sandu Anghel, also known as Bercea Mondial (Bercea the Global), out of a criminal conviction.

The intermediary of the “transaction”, Marian Capatina, who also received EUR 350,000 for his intervention to Mircea Basescu, will also be released from prison into house arrest.

House arrest means that the two won’t be allowed to leave their homes without court approval.
