Banks in Romania have 14,000 fewer employees than in 2008

Romania’s banking system ended 2014 with over 57,700 employees, 40 banks and 168 non-banking financial institutions, according to data from the "Banking Supervision - evolution, principles, tools" presentation held by Adrian Cosmescu, deputy director, the Supervision Department, BNR.

The number of employees has dropped last year by about 900 since the end of 2013.

Compared to 2008, the number went down by about 14,000 people, from almost 72,000 employees at the end of December 2008.

The 40 banks held last year total assets of EUR 81.3 billion, which represented 54% from GDP.

The 168 non-banking financial institutions had assets worth EUR 5.6 billion, meaning 4% from GDP.
