Vote on no-confidence motion set for August 31

27 August 2020

Romania’s Parliament will vote the no-confidence motion against the Liberal Government of Ludovic Orban on Monday, August 31.

Marcel Ciolacu, Chamber of Deputies speaker and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), made the announcement on Facebook on Wednesday evening, August 26.

“The no-confidence motion will be voted on Monday – August 31! The Orban Government must leave!!!” Ciolacu wrote.

The PSD submitted its no-confidence motion on August 17 and the motion was presented to the parliament on August 20. The Social Democrats criticized the Government for the way it handled the COVID-19 crisis and for alleged irregularities in public procurement carried out during the state of emergency.

The PSD leader repeatedly said he was confident the motion would pass, but the outcome is not sure yet.

The no-confidence motion comes just one month before the local elections, set for September 27, and about three months before the parliamentary elections.
