Romania exported 2.5 million tons of maize between July 2014 and June 2015, 2.4 times more than the average in the previous five years, according to the European Commission’s data. Romania generated about 64% of European Union’s maize exports in the same period, reports local Economica.net.

Between 2009 and 2013, the share of Romanian maize in the EU’s total exports was 48%.

Romania had a record corn production last year and also took advantage of the situation in France, which diminished its maize exports by 13% in the last 12 months, down to 448,000 tons. Bulgaria thus became EU’s second largest corn exporter, as its exports increased by 86% in this period, to 506,000 tons.

EU’s biggest corn exports went to Turkey, South Korea, Egypt, and China.
