Iasi Airport makes it to the top three regional airports in Romania

15 January 2016

Some 381,000 passengers transited Romania’s Iasi International Airport in 2015, exceeding the management's estimation of 350,000 passengers. The airport in Iasi has thus made it to the top three regional airports in Romania, after the ones in Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara.

According to the data centralized by the airlines, the airport in Iasi may almost double the number of passengers in 2016, to 700,000.

“The Iasi International Airport has grown very quickly. In 2015, we’ve increased the number of direct flights operated by two companies and we became the base of a third airline,” said Marius Bodea, president of the airport’s Board of Directors.

Starting this year, four airlines will offer 16 international flights from the airport in Iasi. Five new destinations are to be launched in the first half of the year, namely Barcelona (operated by Blue Air starting March 27), Brussels (operated by Blue Air starting March 30), Koln (Blue Air - starting June 3), Larnaca (operated by Wizz Air starting July 1) and Catania (Wizz Air - starting July 3). Moreover, some flights will increase their frequency.

In 2016, Iasi Airport plans to increase the number of international flights, including to Northern Europe, and might also start operating new domestic flights. A first domestic route could be the one linking Iasi to Timisoara in western Romania.
