30 November 2011

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a EUR 17.1 million loan for Apa-Canal Sibiu, the water utility company serving residents in 34 administrative areas in the southern, central and north-western part of Sibiu County as well as those in Fagaras town, located in the neighboring Brasov County. The loan will improve the quality of water supply and sanitation services to about 280,000 people in the central Romanian county of Sibiu.

The funds will be used to part-finance the construction, extension and rehabilitation of the water supply and wastewater treatment systems. The project is part of the EU Cohesion Funds program for Sibiu, worth a total of EUR 124 million.

“Over the last year the Bank provided  EUR 105.6 million to finance similar investments in Constanta, Iasi, Brasov, Buzau and Dambovita-Targoviste counties, helping to improve the quality of water supply and wastewater services across the country and align the services with EU standards,” said Jean-Patrick Marquet, EBRD Director for Municipal and Environmental Infrastructure.

Since the beginning of its operations in Romania, the EBRD has committed over EUR 5.4 billion to various sectors of the country’s economy.
