Bucharest metro operator buys EUR 97 mln worth of trains from Spanish CAF

29 November 2011

The Bucharest metro network operator Metrorex has recently signed a contract to buy 16 trains from Spanish company Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for around EUR 97 million. This contract will be financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) as part of the financing contract for the planned Drumul Taberei – Universitate metro line.

The new trains will be assembled in Romania and will allow passengers to take bicycles on the metro.

The first CAF train supplied under this contract will start running on the existing metro lines in Bucharest sometime in the next year to year and a half. Metrorex plans to buy eight more trains so that the Bucharest metro can run a single type of train on the line.

The EIB loan, worth some EUR 460 million, will be signed next year.
