Romania's finance minister Teodorovici considers running for president

21 March 2019

Romania's finance minister Eugen Teodorovici said on March 20, speaking about a potential presidential candidacy, that “Romania would have a very good chance with such a president” and that “it is normal to think about it," local Mediafax reported.

He floated the idea of his presidential candidacy the day before, in a TV show. However, he did not provide a certain timeline for this, saying that he may run for president at some point. Later on March 20, he looked more interested in the electoral polls he might get.

Teodorovici started his career in the public administration in 1991, when he was only 20 and still a student at the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE), as an “expert”, to remain in the Ministry of Transport by 1999. He later transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and chaired the Court of Auditors, to become a senator in 2016. He served as finance minister in the cabinet of prime minister Victor Ponta and was appointed on the same position in the cabinet of prime minister Viorica Dancila at the beginning of 2018.

As the country’s acting representative in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) board, he won in early 2019 one of the two vice-president mandates along with the finance minister of Lithuania. Teodorovici is a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the senior ruling party in Romania.
