Women have lower salaries than men in Romania

Women continue to make less money than men in Romania, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

On average, women’s wages were 7% lower than men’s, last year. Women got an average gross salary of EUR 505 per month in 2014, compared to EUR 543 in men’s case, and an average net salary of EUR 361, compared to EUR 396 for men, according to an INS report.

In Romania, the average net salary amounted to some EUR 382 per month in 2014.

In regional terms, the average net earnings stood below the national average in 36 of Romania’s counties. The lowest level of EUR 281 was registered in Harghita county while the highest average salary of EUR 549 was recorded In Bucharest.

According to INS, the average number of employees increased in 2014 to 4.7 million, up by 64,100 people compared to the previous year. The average number of women employees increased by 48,000, to 2.13 million, but they still represented only 45% of the total.
