Moromeții 2 wins best film at Romania’s 2019 Gopo awards

Moromeții 2, an adaptation of writer Marin Preda’s novel Morometii directed by Stere Gulea, won the Best Film distinction at the 2019 Gopo awards, an event focused on the Romanian film industry.

The film, which also had the most nominations, received a total of nine trophies. In addition to Best Film, it won awards for Best Image (Vivi Drăgan Vasile), Best Editing (Dana Bunescu and Alexandra Gulea), Best Sound (Dana Bunescu, Cristinel Șirli, Constantin Fleancu), Best Set Design (Cristian Niculescu), Best Costumes (Dana Păpăruz), and Best Makeup & Hair (Dana Roșeanu, Iulia Roșeanu, Domnica Bodogan). It also received the Young Hope award, which went to actor Iosif Paștina, and the Audience Award, granted to productions with the highest box-office success in the previous year.

The Best Director award went to Constantin Popescu for the film Pororoca. The film also brought Bogdan Dumitrache the Best Actor award and Iulia Lumânare the Best Supporting Actress Award.

Director Radu Jude took home the Best Screenplay award for his film I Don’t Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians. Alexandru Dabija won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the production.

The Best Actress award went to Cosmina Stratan, for her role in Love 1. Dog, while the Original Soundtrack award went to Massimiliano Nardulli for his work on Charleston.

Ivana Mladenovic’s Soldiers. Story from Ferentari won the Best Debut Film award, while Alexandru Mavrodineanu’s Caisă won the Best Documentary award. Bogdan Mureșanu’s Christmas Present took home the Best Short award.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer won the Best European Film award.

At the ceremony, held on March 19, actress Ileana Stana Ionescu received the Gopo award for the entire career, while actor Constantin Dinulescu received the award for the entire activity. Dan Chișu received a special award for supporting and encouraging independent film production. Lighting designer Ion Nica also received a special award.
