Romania’s Simona Halep drops to third place in the WTA ranking

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep lost a position in the WTA ranking of the best women tennis players in the world and went down to third place.

Halep, who went up to number two in August, after good performances in Roland Garros and Wimbledon, was drawn back by some injuries.

Last week, she withdrew from the China Open in Beijing after qualifying to the quarter finals of the competition.

Russian Maria Sharapova won the China Open and this victory helped her go from fourth place to second place in the WTA ranking, with 6,680 points.

Czech player Petra Kvitova, the finalist in Beijing, also moved closer to Halep. She is currently fourth in the ranking, with 6,126 points, while Halep has 6,246 points.

Halep’s goal for the end of the season is to play in the WTA Finals in Singapore, a USD 6.5 million championship which brings together this year’s eight best players.
