Only in Romania: New rules to tip the pizza delivery guy

05 May 2015

Romanians who order pizza or any other home delivery will only be able to tip the person who does the delivery by going to the company that delivers the service and get a fiscal receipt for the tip, according to Romania’s finance minister Eugen Teodorovici, quoted by Mediafax.

He came up with this answer when a journalist asked him how the new tax on tips applies for home delivery services.

“If you want to leave a tip (to the pizza delivery guy – e.n.) you go to the respective unit and there the cashier will issue a fiscal receipt for it, and that’s it,” Teodorovici said on Monday, May 4.

UPDATE: The finance minister changed his statement, later on Tuesday. He said that clients won’t have to go to the supplier to pay the tip but that the delivery person will have to declare the tip and issue a tax receipt for it when returning to base. However, Teodorovici didn’t mention how the Client will get the receipt for the tip, according to Mediafax.

The Government recently introduced a new tax on tips that applies to extra revenues made by service providers and their employees. According to the new rules, restaurants and other service companies will have to issue separate fiscal receipts for clients' tips. Either the company or the employees will have to pay the tax on tips depending who gets the revenues.

The Government expects to make some EUR 67 million a year from this tax, which means that it estimates total tips in Romania to be some EUR 420 million a year.
