Romania reports new record single-day increase in COVID-19 cases

Officials reported 799 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, a record number for Romania since the start of the pandemic. Thus, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 35,802 on Friday, July 17, according to the daily official report.

The previous daily record was registered on Thursday, July 16, when the Romanian authorities confirmed 777 infections in 24 hours.

A total of 925,001 tests were performed in Romania so far, of which 18,968 in the last 24 hours.

A total of 24,598 patients were discharged by Friday, July 17: 22,312 have recovered, while 2,286 asymptomatic patients were discharged ten days after the diagnosis.

Furthermore, 823 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 were discharged upon request.

Meanwhile, the death toll has risen to 1,988. A total of 17 deaths were reported between July 16 (10:00) and July 17 (10:00), in the age categories of 50-59 years (5 deaths), 60-69 years (7 deaths), and 70-79 years (5 deaths).

At this time, 273 patients are treated in intensive care units.

The government estimated in a document seen by G4media.ro that the number of coronavirus cases reported daily in Romania could reach 1,200-1,600 in mid-August. The estimate is part of a document supporting the government’s decision to extend the state of alertby another 30 days. It was done by the Technical-Scientific Committee of the National Committee for Emergency Situations.
