Two Romanian films join New York Film Festival lineup

Two Romanian films have been selected for the 2016 New York Film Festival’s Main Slate, namely Cristian Mungiu’s Bacalaureat/Graduation and Cristi Puiu’s Sieranevada.

Moreover, German film Toni Erdmann, whose executive producer is Romanian Ada Solomon, is also part of the official selection.

Cristian Mungiu is one of the best-known Romanian directors. He was invited this year to join the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which decides the winners of the famous Oscar prizes. His latest film Graduation brought him the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Cristi Puiu is a Romanian director best known for his 2005 dark comedy The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Moartea Domnului Lazarescu). The movie got the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005. His film Sieranevada was also selected in the Cannes Film Festival’s main competition this year.

The 54th New York Film Festival will take place between September 30 and October 16. A total of 25 films from around the globe were selected for the festival’s Main Slate. Find out more about the event here.
