Three Romanian soldiers die as truck plunges into ravine

30 June 2017

Three Romanian soldiers lost their lives on Thursday night after a military truck with 13 soldiers aboard plunged into a ravine. Seven other soldiers were injured and taken to hospitals in Brasov and Bucharest.

The truck driver said his brakes broke down in a curve and he could do nothing to prevent the accident, according to interior minister Carmen Dan, quoted by local Mediafax.

The new Prime Minister Mihai Tudose was unhappy with the way the rescue intervention took place, because the rescuers didn’t have the necessary eqipment, including a helicopter that could fly at night and cranes.

„I’m dissatisfied that on my first day as Prime Minister I see that we don’t have everything it takes,” Tudose said. He added that measures would be taken in the first cabinet meeting that was to take place on Friday.

The accident occured in Dambovicioara village, in Arges county. The truck was last in a column of four military vehicles that were going from the Cincu shooting range in Brasov county to a military base in Campulung Muscel, according to the Defense Ministry.

The three soldiers who lost their lives were 38, 32, and 40. Two of them had been in missions in Afghanistan.
