Senate president: Corruption has become Romania’s country brand

While other countries boast with tourism and industry, corruption has become Romania’s country brand, Senate president Calin Popescu Tariceanu said on Friday, May 4. He blames the chief anticorruption prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi for this situation. Tariceanu added that the ruling coalition that he is part of has been trying to consolidate justice and the rule of law rather than weaken them, and that rule of law is not questionable in Romania, local Mediafax reported. He added that the report from the Council of Europe’s anticorruption body GRECO doesn’t single out Romania and that other countries are also confronted with corruption as well. “Corruption is not Romania’s specialty as Ms. Kovesi wanted to create it. Thanks to Ms. Kovesi, corruption has become Romania’s country brand,” Tariceanu said. editor@romania-insider.com
