Small Romanian village lacks water network, builds synthetic football field

The village of Şumugiu, in western Romania’s Bihor country, will have a synthetic football field, Digi24 reported. The field will be set up near the former school of the village, which closed down three years ago because there were not enough children attending. The village, which has little over 100 inhabitants, also lacks a drinking water network. The football field costs RON 185,000 (EUR 39,700) and will have 924 sqm. Many residents would rather see the money invested in the road infrastructure or a kindergarten but mayor Adrian Pietroi of the Hidişelu de Sus commune, which encompasses Şumugiu, says the football field project is part of an investment plan established when he took over the job. “The youth in Şumugiu wanted to have a field. And we developed a four-year program to build roads, to repair homes and build a sports field and a water network,” Pietroi told Digi24. Regarding the water network, the mayor said the project was already approved, the funding exists, but it is blocked as no company was designated for this because of the bidding procedure. Last year, the same commune set up a multi-functional field, equipped with a night lighting system, in Hidişelu de Sus. The investment amounted to RON 120,000 (EUR 25,806).
